(*) Previous knowledge

We recommend having basic or intermediate knowledge of Rhino and Grasshopper3D, as well as a general understanding of data trees and their structure. Basic experience with 3D printing is also required.

Additionally, if you’re new to Grasshopper, you can check out our pre-recorded course.
Introduction to Grasshopper.

PROGRAM

In this 15-hour course, you will learn how to harness the power of Grasshopper to generate custom code that controls the path of 6-axis robotic arms. Students will be responsible for operating the robots under our supervision and designing a chair that will be 3D printed at full scale using an industrial pellet extruder attached to a robotic arm.

This course is organized by Controlmad in collaboration with Lowpoly.

Lowpoly offers a comprehensive design service specializing in digital manufacturing and innovation, adapting to the needs of each client. They care about recycling and reusing manufacturing scraps as printing material for their product line.

PROGRAM

Module #1: Introduction to robot arms and their configuration inside Grasshopper in its most common workflows.

Module #2: Understanding how to 3D print at large scale with a robot arm. The students will design one chair or similar object and it will be 3D printed in real size.

Module #3: Related to controlling other types of end effectors as well as their paths and planes for the robot to be moved.

We will use two different ABB robot arms:

ABB IRB-140 and ABB IRB-6620, with the ABB language robot: RAPID.
The course also includes an introduction to robotic arms and their setup within Grasshopper for the most common workflows.
